西村画廊では、2018年3月10日(土)から4月21日(土)まで「小林孝亘」展を開催します。
本展では、森を舞台にした2014年以降の作品を中心に、1990年代のドローイング10数点、約20年振りに描いた犬の絵を含む最新作2点を展示します。 小林にとって森は20年近く描きつづけている重要なモチーフの一つであり、これまで、森の中の道や木立といった森そのものを題材にした作品から、森と何か——森の中に置かれた不可能なバランスの積木や不可解な大きさの壷など——を描いたものまで、多様な形で森を表現して来ました。

小林は1960年東京に生まれ、1986年に愛知県立芸術大学美術学部油画科を卒業しました。1990年代半ばから注目を集め、西村画廊（1996年～）、国立国際美術館（2000年）、目黒区美術館（2004年）、横須賀美術館（2014年）での個展をはじめ、国内外の数多くの展覧会に出展してきました。一昨年は初のエッセイ集「ふつうの暮らし、あたりまえの絵」（求龍堂）を出版し、昨年その特装版（ドローイングとスノードーム付）を限定50部で発行、当画廊で刊行記念展を開催しました。小林はこれをきっかけに初めてスノードームをモチーフにした絵を制作しましたが、今回の個展でも、ベッドの上を雪が降る非現実的な光景のスノードームを描いた作品《Snowdome–bed》（2017）を披露します。現在、小林は製菓会社の六花亭が運営するギャラリー柏（札幌）で個展を開催していますが（～2月12日）、本展では、その展覧会のために描いた新作も数点展示します。またその他に、日比谷図書文化館で開催中のグループ展「DOMANI・明日展 PLUS 本という樹、図書館という森」にも参加しています（～2月18日）。

小林は大学を卒業後9年近く描きつづけた「潜水艦」の時代を経て、器や枕など日常的なものを題材に、普遍性と光に重点を置いた絵画を制作してきました。奇をてらうことなく、常に時流から一定の距離を保ち、地道に自身の内側を手探りしながら新たな表現を獲得してきた小林の作品は、モチーフは様々であれども、「存在」の不思議を感覚させる共通の気配を湛えています。

当画廊では1年振り15回目となる小林孝亘の個展に、どうぞご期待ください。

Nishimura Gallery will present the exhibition “Takanobu Kobayashi” from March 10 to April 21, 2018.
The exhibition will feature works set in the forest since 2014, as well as more than a dozen drawings from the 1990s and two of his latest works, including his first drawing of a dog in about 20 years. For Kobayashi, the forest has been an important motif. He has expressed the forest in a variety of ways, from the forest itself, such as paths and groves in the forest, to the forest and something else, such as the impossible variety of blocks and unexplainable size of vessels placed in the forest.

Kobayashi was born in Tokyo in 1960 and graduated from Aichi University of the Arts in 1986. He has participated in numerous exhibitions in Japan and abroad, including solo shows at the Meguro Museum of Art (2004) and the Yokosuka Museum of Art (2014). The year before last, he published his first essays book from Kyuryudo Art Publishing, and last year a limited edition of 50 copies of a special edition (with drawings and a snow globe) of the book was published and a commemorative exhibition was held at our gallery. This was the first time
Kobayashi made a painting with a snow globe as a motif, and he will also exhibit “Snowdome-bed” (2017), a work depicting a snow globe with an unrealistic scene of snow falling on a bed, in this solo exhibition. Kobayashi is currently holding a solo exhibition at Gallery Kashiwa (Sapporo), run by the confectionery company Rokkatei (until 12 February), and several new works painted for that exhibition will also be on view at this show. In addition, he is participating in the group exhibition “DOMANI, Tomorrow Exhibition PLUS: A Tree Called Book, A Forest Called Library” at the Hibiya Library & Museum (until 18 February).

After his “Submarine” period, during which he painted for nearly nine years after graduating from university, Kobayashi has been creating paintings with an emphasis on universality and light, using everyday objects such as vessels and pillows as his subjects. Without being eccentric, he has always maintained a certain distance from the current trends without trying to be eccentric, and has steadily explored his own inner world while acquiring new forms of expression. Although the motifs of Kobayashi’s works vary, they all share the same sense of the wonder of “existence”.
