Biography
| 1933 | 山形県米沢市に生まれる Born in Yonezawa City, Yamagata Prefecture |
| 1954 | 東京写真短期大学（現・東京工芸大学）卒業 Graduated Tokyo Junior College of Photography（Tokyo Polytechnic University） |
| 1959 | 東松照明、川田喜久治、奈良原一高、佐藤明、丹野章と共にセルフエージェンシー"VIVO"を結成（-1961年） Cofounded the "Vivo" collective |
| 1960 | 個展「おとこと女」により日本写真批評家協会新人賞を受賞 |
| 1963 | 三島由紀夫が被写体になった「薔薇刑」（集英社）により日本写真家協会作家賞を受賞 |
| 1970 | 土方巽が被写体となった「鎌鼬」（現代思潮社）で芸術選奨文部科学大臣賞を受賞 |
| 1995 | 清里フォトアートミュージアム初代館長となる The First Director of Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts |
| 2003 | 英国王立写真協会より特別勲章を授与 Awarded The Royal Photographic Society's Special 150th Anniversary Medal and Honorary Fellowship |
