西村画廊では、2025年7月8日（火）から8月9日（土）まで、小林孝亘のペインティング4点とドローイング19点の計23点の新作による展覧会 『さようなら、こんにちは』を開催いたします。

1960年東京に生まれた小林孝亘は、1986年愛知県立芸術大学美術学部油画科を卒業後、外界との接触を自己防衛的に避ける自身の投影として9年近く描き続けた「潜水艦」の時代を経て、器や枕、森など普遍的で日常的なものを題材に、光に重点を置いた絵画を制作してきました。常に時流の動向から一定の距離を保ち、地道に自身の内側を手探りしながら本質的な表現を志向してきた小林の作品は、主に正面から見た左右対称の構図で、我々が普段目にしているごくありふれたものが、奇を衒わない丁寧な筆触で描かれているのが特徴的です。それらの絵画は、見慣れたものが潜在的に持つ非日常性を浮上させ、ひいては「存在」していることの不思議を観者に意識させる、稀有な魅力を有しています。換言すれば、ある対象が象徴的および匿名的に描写されたその画面には、たとえば生きるために眠りを繰り返し死に至る人間の「生／死」の暗喩として枕を描いた《Pillow》シリーズに顕著なように、表裏一体の現象が静かに同居しており、「存在」というこの世界の神秘が輝かしく伏在しています。小林は、当画廊で1996年から継続的に新作展を開催している他、国立国際美術館（2000年）、目黒区美術館（2004年）、横須賀美術館（2014年）、豊田市美術館（2022年）での個展をはじめ、国内外で多数の展覧会歴があります。

本展では、「森」と「空」を題材にした新作23点を発表します。「森」は小林にとって“もう一度生まれ変わる”場所、すなわち「生」であり、一方「空」は、どこまでも続く天上を想起させることから、「死」を連想させるモチーフです。
前回（2023年）の当画廊での個展『うつわたち』以後、“もう一度森に戻る”を主題に次の展覧会の制作準備を進めていた矢先、小林は病を得て、手術と入院を経験しました。その後、“この先絵が描けるかどうか”という不安の中で、リハビリとして小さなノートに自らの手や猫の姿を描き始めた小林は、やがて“森へ戻る”イメージをドローイングできるようになり、無事制作に帰還することができました。本展で発表される「森」と「空」の絵画にどこか現実ばなれした気配が漂うのは、そうした小林の心象（森＝生/空＝死）の反映であり、そしてまた、「さようなら」から「こんにちは」へと再び「生」＝「絵画制作」に帰ってくることができた心境の表れでもあるといえるでししょう。

Nishimura Gallery is pleased to present “Goodbye, hello,” an exhibition of 4 new paintings and 19 new drawings by Takanobu KOBAYASHI from 8 July to 9 August 2025.

Born in Tokyo in 1960, Takanobu Kobayashi graduated from the Oil Painting Department of Aichi University of the Arts in 1986. He began to emerge in the mid-1990s and has participated in numerous exhibitions in Japan and abroad, including solo shows at the National Museum of Art, Osaka (2000), the Meguro Museum of Art (2004), and the Yokosuka Museum of Art (2014). Last year in 2022, he had a solo exhibition “Midday” at the Toyota Municipal Museum of Art and also participated in the concurrent group exhibition “Sunset/Sunrise”, which was well received. We have been continuously presenting his exhibitions since 1996.
After graduating from university, Kobayashi went through the “Submarine” period, during which he painted for nearly nine years as a projection of himself avoiding contact with the outside world as a form of self-protection, and has since produced paintings with an emphasis on light, using universal, everyday objects such as vessels, pillows, and forests as his subject matter.

This exhibition will feature 23 new works based on the subjects of “forest” and “sky”. For Kobayashi, the “forest” is a place of rebirth, a symbol of “life,” while “the sky,” which evokes the endless heavens, is a motif that suggests “death.” After his last solo exhibition, Vessels, at the gallery in 2023, just as he was preparing for his next exhibition with the theme “Back to the Forest Again,” Kobayashi became ill, underwent surgery and hospitalization. Later, in the midst of uncertainty about whether he would ever be able to paint again, Kobayashi began drawing his own hands and the image of a cat in a small notebook as a rehabilitation project. Eventually, he was able to draw the image of “returning to the forest,” and returned safely to his work. The sense of otherworldliness in the paintings of “forest” and “sky” presented in this exhibition reflects Kobayashi’s mental state (forest = life / sky = death) , and also an expression of his state of mind that he was able to return to “life” = ‘painting’ again, from “goodbye” to “hello”.
