西村画廊では、2024年4月30日（火）から6月8日（土）まで、曽谷朝絵の新作展 “深呼吸” を開催いたします。

曽谷朝絵は1974年神奈川県に生まれ、2006年東京藝術大学大学院美術研究科油画専攻にて博士号（美術）を取得。2002年にVOCA 賞（グランプリ）を受賞するなど大学院在学中から頭角を現し、2013年には水戸芸術館で大規模な個展を開催しました。また、絵画制作と並行して、カッティングシートを主材にした大がかりなインスタレーションも国内外の様々な公共施設で継続的に展開しています。今年は2月に初の立体作品を横浜市HAZAWA VALLEY のパブリックアートとして発表。7月に川崎市市民ミュージアム主催で絵画とインスタレーションによる個展を開催予定です。

曽谷の作品は、バスタブの水の波紋やそこにきらめくプリズム、時間の経過と共に移ろう暖かな日溜りなどが、鮮やかな色彩と驚異的な描写力によって体感的に抽出されているのが特徴で、視覚のみならず触覚や体温にも心地よく働きかけてくる親密で身体的な魅力を有しています。そこには我々が日常的に体験し得る豊穣で細微な実感が濃縮された、小宇宙的な広がりが横溢しており、あふれる光に包まれるような感覚を観者に誘起します。

本展では、植物と光の眩しく躍動する生命力をとらえた新作絵画およそ15点を披露します。

光の雑草　曽谷朝絵

植物は光を食べて生きている。
いつも作品の中で光を求めている私は、だから植物に魅かれるのかもしれない。
雑草のシリーズの始まりは、コロナ禍で人の手が入らなくなった街のあちこちに雑草が繁り、森のようになっていたことである。その光景は、都市における自然と人間のパワーバランスは案外すぐにひっくり返されてしまうのではないかと思わされるような、爆発的なパワーに満ちていた。
その光景に魅了され、様々な視点で植物を描いてきたが、今回はこれまでよりも更に光にフォーカスしていると思う。
それも静止した光ではなく、見ているうちにどんどん光と影が入れ替わっていくような、片時も止まらない光である。
それは、植物も人間も光も常に動いているからである。例えば森の中に分け入ると、木々が風で色々な方向に動き、自分の視点も歩くたびに変わり、きらきらと光と影が入れ替わる。そんな光の体験そのものを描きたかった。
今回の作品には花も多い。
人は花に時に優しさを、時に悼みを、時に希望や愛を必死で託す。それは、あちこちで戦争が起きているこの不安定な時代においても、どこの国でもどの民族でも変わらない。
でも花自身は実はそんなことお構いなしに、ただ光を求め、爛々とパワフルに、システマチックに咲いている。まるで人間の世界で何が起こっても何の変わりもなく降り注ぐ太陽光みたいだと思う。
そんな、すごく美しく、すごく不気味でもある、光の化身のような植物たちに、絵の中に生きてもらいたくてこれらの絵を描いた。
むせ返るように花が咲き乱れる、光の雑草の森に迷い込んだような空間を作れたらと思っている。

当画廊での5度目ほぼ1年ぶりとなる曽谷朝絵の新作展に、どうぞご期待ください。

Nishimura Gallery is pleased to present “Deep breath,” an exhibition of new works by Asae Soya from 30 April to 8 June, 2024.

Born in Kanagawa Prefecture in 1974, Asae Soya received her doctorate in oil painting from the Tokyo University of the Arts in 2006, and emerged as a prominent artist while still a graduate student, winning the VOCA Grand Prix in 2002, and many others. In addition to painting, she has been continuously creating large-scale installations using cutting sheets as the main material at various public facilities in Japan and abroad. This year, in February, she presented her first three-dimensional work as a public artwork at the Hazawa Valley in Yokohama, and in July, she will hold a solo exhibition of paintings and installations hosted by the Kawasaki City Museum.

Soya’s works are characterized by vivid colors and astonishing descriptive power to extract the ripples of water in the bathtub, the shimmering prisms in the water, and the warm sun’s rays that shift with the passage of time, all of which have an intimate and physical appeal that works comfortably not only on the sense of sight but also on the senses of touch and body temperature. That is a microcosmic expanse that is full of the fertility and subtlety that we experience in our daily lives, inviting the viewer to feel as if they are enveloped by an overflowing light.

This exhibition will feature approximately 15 new paintings that capture the dazzling and vibrant life force of plants and light.

Weeds of Light – Asae Soya

Plants live by feeding on light.
I am always looking for light in my work, perhaps that is why I am attracted to plants.
The series of “Weeds” began when I noticed that weeds had grown here and there in the city, which had lost its human touch due to the Corona disaster, and had become like a forest. The scene was filled with an explosive power that made me think that the balance of power between nature and humans in the city might be upset sooner than expected.
Fascinated by this scene, I have painted plants from various perspectives, but this time I think I am focusing even more on light than before.
This time, however, the focus is even more on light, not static light, but light that never stops, as if the light and shadows are constantly changing as you look at it.
This is because plants, people, and light are always moving. For example, when you walk into a forest, the trees move in various directions with the wind, your perspective changes as you walk, and light and shadow are constantly changing. I wanted to depict such an experience of light itself.
There are many flowers in this work.
People sometimes entrust flowers with kindness, sometimes with mourning, and sometimes with hope and love. This is the same in any country or race, even in these unstable times when wars are happening all over the place.
But the flowers themselves, in fact, do not care about such things, but simply seek the light and bloom systematically and powerfully. It is like the sunlight that pours down without any change no matter what happens in the human world.
I painted these pictures because I wanted these plants, which are like incarnations of light, so beautiful and so eerie, to live in my paintings.
I hope to create a space in which viewers can feel as if they have wandered into a forest of light weeds, where flowers are blooming like a swarm of flowers.
