西村画廊では、6月23日(火)から7月25日(土)まで「Seven 西村画廊35 周年記念展」を開催いたします。1974年に銀座2丁目に開廊して以来、銀座4丁目から現在の日本橋への移転を経て、今年の6月で35周年を迎えることになりました。
西村画廊は、開廊第1回展「リチャード・リンドナー版画展」から先月好評のうちに終了した「Drawings」に至るまで、256回の展覧会を開催してきました。開廊当時より数多くの個展を企画し、特にまだ日本では馴染みの薄かったイギリス現代作家の紹介と普及に努めてきました。25回個展を開いたデイヴィッド・ホックニーを筆頭に、2008年には世界の優れた芸術家に贈られる高松宮殿下記念世界文化賞を受賞し、現在もなお精力的な活動と知的な作品で人々を魅了し続けるリチャード・ハミルトン、ピーター・ブレイク、ルシアン・フロイド、アンソニー・グリーン、フィリップ・キング、ブリジット・ライリー、パトリック・コールフィールド、デイヴィッド・ナッシュ、ボイル・ファミリーなどイギリスのトップクラスのアーティストたちの作品発表を継続的に行ってきました。
　優れた外国人作家を紹介する一方で、新たな日本人作家の才能と可能性を見いだし、彼らの制作を支援、発表の場を提供してきました。開廊翌年の1975年には草間弥生の帰国第1 回個展「冥界からの死のメッセージ」、篠原有司男の渡米後の初個展、実験的なテーマ展として注目を浴びた「本・オブジェ」展などを開催、またその後は、榎倉康二の商業画廊における第1 回個展、中西夏之、鴫剛ら、80年代以降は、今年の毎日芸術賞と芸術選奨文部科学大臣賞を立て続けに受賞した舟越桂をはじめ、深井隆、神山明、下川昭宣といった先進的な立体作家の個展を開いてきました。そして90年代後半から現在に至るまで、小林孝亘、押江千衣子、三沢厚彦、町田久美、曽谷朝絵、樋口佳絵など、昨今の美術界を牽引し第一線で活躍している作家たちを育成し、彼らとともに画廊も発展して来ました。
　また、画廊の企画部門であるAPS は、「ホックニーのオペラ」展（1992 年、Bunkamura 他）、「デイヴィッド・ナッシュ音威子府の森」展（1994年、神奈川県立近代美術館他）、「アンテスとカチーナ人形」展（2004年、高松市美術館他）などをプロデュースしました。
　西村画廊は35年という時代の変化の中にありながら、流行にとらわれず、常に本当の意味で新しく、唯一のスタイルで存在感を放つ作品を紹介し続けています。この度の記念展「Seven」では、西村画廊の歴史を回顧するのではなく、現在のレギュラーメンバーである7名、押江千衣子、小林孝亘、曽谷朝絵、樋口佳絵、舟越桂、町田久美、三沢厚彦の力作を展示することで36年目の現在を見つめます。なお、バンコク滞在中の小林、文化庁芸術家在外研修員としてデンマークに滞在中の町田は海外からの参加となります。どうぞよろしくお願いいたします。

　Nishimura Gallery celebrates 35th anniversary this June. We are pleased to announce the exhibition of “Seven － 35th Anniversary” from June 23rd to July 25th.
The gallery started in Ginza 2 chome in 1974, which moved to Ginza 4 chome later, and then to Nihonbashi.
　Nishimura Gallery has held 256 exhibitions. The very first, Richard Lindner Lithographs, to the latest “Drawings”. From the beginning, we have planned a lot of exhibitions and worked especially hard to introduce British artists who weren’t very familiar among Japanese people. For instance, we had 25 exhibition of David Hockney so far. And, there were lots of Richard Hamilton’s exhibitions,too. The artist won “Praemium Imperiale” in 2008, and keeps fascinating many people with his energetic activities and intellectual works. Furthermore, we have exhibited many works of the British top artists such as Peter Blake, Lucian Freud, Anthony Green, Phillip King, Bridget Riley, Patrick Caulfield, David Nash, Boyle Family etc.
　At the same time, Nishimura gallery has discovered Japanese new artists with talent and great potential, and has supported their works and offered space to exhibit their works. In 1975, the next year from the founding, we had an exhibition of Kusama Yayoi “Message of death from the hades”. It was the first exhibition since she came back from New York. In 1975, we also held the first solo exhibition of Ushio Shinohara and the experimental group exhibition “Book as Object” which gathered many attention because of the theme. Following those exhibitions, we had the first solo exhibitions of several artists such as Koji Enokura, Natsuyuki Nakanishi and Goh Shigi. After the 1980’s, we showed many works by advanced sculptors. Katsura Funakoshi won the Mainichi Art Award and Technology Art Encouragement Prize in 2009, and works of others artists such as Takashi Fukai, Akira Kamiyama, Akiobu Shimokawa etc. From the 1990’s to present, we have developed ourselves with artists of a new generation such as Takanobu Kobayashi, Chieko Oshie, Atsuhiko Misawa, Kumi Machida, Asae Soya, and Kae Higuchi. They are in the first line and leading the world of art today.
　And then, we produced “Hockney’s Opera”(Bunkamura The Museum and toured in 1992), “David Nash Spirit of Three Seasons”(The Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura and toured in 1995), “Horst Antes and Kachinas”(Takamatsu City Museum of Art and toured in 2004) and more.
　Nishimura gallery will continue to introduce lots of truly new works having unique style and emitting strong presence. This commemorative exhibition “Seven – the 35th Anniversary”, is not only to review the history of our gallery but it is an opportunity to gaze into the present through masterpieces by our regular seven artists. Incidentally, Kobayashi staying in Bangkok and Machida, in Denmark by scholarship of Bereau of Cultural Properties will participate this exhibition from abroad.

押江千衣子　Chieko OSHIE

1969年大阪府生まれ。1995年京都市立芸術大学大学院修了。大阪府在住。のびのびとしたタッチで植物を描いた作品により2001年タカシマヤ美術賞、VOCA賞、京都市芸術新人賞を受賞し、実力ある人気作家として期待されている。2003年には文化庁在外研修員として2年間ベルギーに留学。「森」を新たなテーマにした2008年の当画廊での個展では、オイルパステルと油彩によって描かれた、その繊細な色彩感覚と確かな画面構成力を発揮した作品で高い評価を受けた。同年秋には大原美術館の美術家滞在制作プログラム「ARKO」で倉敷にて滞在制作、大原美術館で個展開催。

Oshie was born in 1969 in Osaka prefecture, graduated from Kyoto City University of Art in 1995. She lives in Osaka. she uses the oil pastels with her fingers all over a canvas. Her paintings represent the loving and the closeness toward the subjects. She was awarded Takashimaya Charitable Trust for Art and Culture Prize, VOCA Prize and Kyoto City Art Prize. In 2007, the exhibition “In the Forest” showing paintings drawn in bright green oil pastel at Kumanokodo and through the paintings, she interprets the dense atmosphere of dark green forest and the ranging mountains of Kumano. She joined Artist in Residence Kurashiki, Ohara(Ohara Museum of Art) and her exhibition held at Ohara Museum in 2008.

小林孝亘　Takanobu KOBAYASHI

1960年東京都生まれ。1986年愛知県立芸術大学卒業。バンコクと東京に住む。1996年より西村画廊で定期的に作品を発表する。1996年VOCA奨励賞を受賞。食器、車のテールランプ、森の風景など日常的な題材を独自の表現で描く。絵具を塗り込めるようにして表現された静かな光が魅力的な作品を制作する。また、眠る人を描いた”小さな死”や日光浴する人を描いた”Sunbather”シリーズ、顔を画面いっぱいに描いた”ポートレート”シリーズなど、風景だけではなく、人物を題材にした作品も多く描いている。小林の作品が持つ深い精神性は、国内外を問わず高く評価されている。

Kobayashi was born in Tokyo, 1960. Graduated from Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts in 1986. Now he lives and works in Bangkok and Tokyo. He was awarded VOCA Encouragement Prize in 1996 and his solo exhibition in our gallery was held same year.Kobayashi’s major works ar oil paintings of daily-life subject, such as tablewares, a bench at a park or tale lights of a car, although they are depicted in his unique way. Kobayashi uses heavily thick paint to express quiet light subject, such as stillness, and tries to reveal unseen in ordinary moments. On the other hand, he is focusing on human figures, including “Small Death” series, “Sunbather” series, and “Portrait” series. kobayashi’s refined spirituality is now recognized internationally.

曽谷朝絵　Asae SOYA

1974年神奈川県生まれ。東京芸術大学大学院博士課程満期退学。神奈川県在住。光の溢れる画面にバスタブを描いた作品で2001年昭和シェル石油現代美術賞グランプリ、2002年VOCA賞を受賞。バスタブの質感と輝く光の表現が心地良い作品で知られている。2007年に待望の初個展を開催。バスタブの他に窓にきらめく水滴や飛行場の風景などの新作を発表し、より繊細な光の表情を鮮やかに描き出した作品が高く評価された。2008年には森をモチーフにした「air」シリーズを発表し、新たな展開を見せている。同シリーズは大阪梅田にあるブリーゼタワーの壁画にも使用されている。

Soya was born in 1974 in Kanagawa prefecture, and conferred a doctorate for painting major of Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 2006. She draws a bathtub and her paintings are full of light. She was awarded the grand prize “The 6th Exhibition of Showa Shell Sekiyu Contemporary Art Prize” in 2001 and VOCA Prize in 2002. She had her first solo exhibition in Nishimura Gallery in 2007. In 2008, SOYA Asae began her new “air”series.This new style and direction of her art work, is shown in her mural of BREEZE TOWER in Osaka.

樋口佳絵　Kae HIGUCHI

1975年宮城県生まれ。1997年東北生活文化大学卒業。宮城県仙台市在住。2005年宮城県芸術選奨新人賞受賞、2007年VOCA展で大原美術館賞受賞。テンペラ特有の白く霞んだ優しい色彩を用いて、子供の姿を描く。愛らしさの裏に潜む刺を繊細にとらえた作品で注目を集めている。

Higuchi was born in 1975 in Miyagi prefecture, graduated from the Tohoku Seikatsu Bunka College in 1997, and had her first solo exhibition in Nishimura Gallery in 2005. She lives and works in Sendai, Miyagi. In 2005, she was awarded Young Artist Prize of Miyagi Prefecture and Ohara Museum of Art Prize at VOCA 2007. Her major works are paintings, which are delicately capturing recollective and cinematic visions, usually of infants, lovely but carrying a sting on the other side, with gentle colors of tempera.

舟越桂　Katsura FUNAKOSHI

1951年岩手県生まれ。1977年東京芸術大学大学院修了。東京都在住。楠を使った木彫の半身像に大理石の眼を嵌め込む手法で人物像を制作する。詩的な佇まいと独特の静けさを備えた作品は国内外で高い評価を得ている。近年は「スフィンクス」をテーマにした作品を発表。人格を超越したその普遍的な存在感は注目を集めている。2009年には毎日芸術賞、文化庁芸術選奨文部科学大臣賞を受賞。

Funakoshi was born in 1951 in Iwate prefecture, graduated from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 1977, and has been exhibiting his works in Nishimura Gallery since 1985. His major works are sculptures of half-length figure, marble-eyed and curved out from kusu wood, which is now internationally recognized and applauded for its poetic presence and keen sense of silence. In his recent years, he is working on series of sculptures which representing a symbolic character of “sphinx.” Its superhuman and universal existence is reinforcing more of his originality. He was awarded “Mainichi Art Award” and “The Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s Art Encouragement Prize” in 2009.

町田久美　Kumi MACHIDA

1970年群馬県生まれ。1994年多摩美術大学卒業。2007年Sovereign Asian Art Prize受賞。雲肌麻紙に細い墨線を幾度も重ね、しなやかさと強度をあわせもった線で、インパクトあるモチーフが特徴的な絵画を制作する。2008年2月にドイツ・ハノーバーのkestnergesellschaftで美術館での初個展を開催、また高崎市タワー美術館での個展、西村画廊での新作個展も好評で、幅広く注目を集めている期待の作家。現在は文化庁芸術家在外研修員としてデンマークに滞在中。

Machida was born in 1970 in Gunma prefecture, graduated from Tama Art University in 1994. She lives and works in Koganei, Tokyo. Her first exhibition at our gallery was held in 2004. She uses such traditional mediums for nihonga, just as kumohada paper, sumi ink or mineral pigments, to paint nonesuch, among not only in the field of nihonga but also any other pictorial art today. Uniquely, she “paints” lines; in her works, each line is rigorous accumulation of extremely thin lines, and the lines are making strict compositions to symbolize her vertiginous ideas. She is among the most remarkable young artists internationally at this present. This year, Machida’s first exhibition in the museum was held in Hannover, Germany. Her solo exhibition in this year also overwhelmed the viewers. Now, She stays in Denmark by Japanese government overseas study program for artists.

三沢厚彦　Atsuhiko MISAWA

1961年京都府生まれ。1989年東京芸術大学大学院修了。神奈川県茅ヶ崎市在住。2000年西村画廊での初個展”Animals”で注目を集める。様々な種類の動物をいきいきとした魅力的なかたちで表現した楠の木彫作品を制作する。2001年平櫛田中賞、2005年にタカシマヤ美術賞を受賞。2007-2008年には、個展「ANIMALS+」が平塚市美術館を皮切りに北海道立旭川美術館、高崎市美術館、伊丹市立美術館、ふくやま美術館を巡回し、親しみやすくユーモラスでありつつ、重量感のある作品が高く評価された。2009年の春から夏にかけて愛知県美術館で個展を、メルシャン軽井沢美術館でグループ展を開催。

Misawa was born 1961 in Kyoto, graduated Tokyo National University of Arts and Music in 1989. Now he lives and works in Chigasaki, Kanagawa. In 2000, his first solo exhibition at our gallery, “Animals” was highly applaused. In 2001, he was awarded the Hirakushi Denchu Prize. His major works are wooden sculptures of various animals, lively, wild and humorous. The retrospective exhibition “ANIMALS＋” is toured around Japan in 2007 – 2008, which has started from Hiratsuka Museum of Art. The exhibition is evaluated as Misawa excitingly set a new aspect for wooden sculpture. From this spring to summer, he will holds a solo exhibition at Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art and group exhibition at Mercian Karuizawa Museum of Art.
