Nishimura Gallery is pleased to present “Flying in the Library” an exhibition of new works by Katsura Funakoshi from 25 May to 3 June 2023.

Katsura Funakoshi, born in Iwate Prefecture in 1951, has been consistently expressing his art since the 1980s by inlaying marble eyes into half-length wooden carved painted figures, and is highly regarded both in Japan and abroad as one of the most important sculptors in Japan.

From the simple, unclothed figures of his early works to fairy and beastly forms, mountainous physiques, two figures in one, hands appearing on shoulders and backs, half-human, half-beast, and hermaphrodite sphinxes, naked figures growing out of churches, and even recent works, such as his latest work “Flying in the Library” (2023) which has trees, books, and a church above its head, Funakoshi has continued to earnestly search for what is human beings, and has attempted to affirm the existence of human beings through his works that have undergone repeated transitions. The statues, with their dashing yet solitary, introspective appearance and dignified gaze that exudes a delicate intellect, have Funakoshi’s characteristic serene beauty of form, but they also express various aspects of human nature, such as goodness and beastliness, and fascinate the viewer like a never-ending fountain.

In this exhibition, we will show the latest sculpture mentioned above (Flying in the Library), which was presented at Art Fair Tokyo 2023 and became a private collection abroad, along with 10 new drawings.

We are sincerely looking forward to your visit.
